Simple, unpatronising and clear - Rated
Having just entered my final year of Uni, and having worked as a cook to ease the financial pressure, I was skeptical that the book was going to be used. However, having looked through I've found the recipes delicious, cheap and unpretencious. Fiona Beckett obviously knows her audience and, rather than assuming that all students are half-wits, offers clear advice on hygiene, seasonality of food and kitchen utensils. The best student book I have ever seen.

My nephew is off to uni next month and I bought this book for him..... and like the other reviewer having looked at it I didnt want to part with it either, so I have bought myself a copy for the recipes, as I often want to have tasty meals that do not come from a microwave. Fortunately I dont need the basic instructions but having been a student myself 30 years ago I can see that this part will be invaluable to those who are having to fend for themselves for the first time..... all we had was Mrs Beaton !!

This book is great. Going from the very basics of what equipment you will need and basic food hygiene right through to gourmet meals for friends.
I am a student and would highly recommend this book for all going to live alone for the first time, not just students.
Beckett has though of everything, from recommended wine to how to carve a chicken.
Good for beginners and advanced, but most of all easy to follow and amusingly written!!

after a year at university of eating random dodgy baked bean curry, i'm now desperate to get back in the kitchen of our new house :) inspired by this excellent book. i really like the fact that the recipes are interesting but not difficult (i tried one at home and it actually worked!)move over jamie oliver, that's what i say!!!!

A brilliant basic cookbook - Rated
I bought this book for a friend who's off to uni' in a couple of weeks, thinking it might persuade her into cooking and eating well. I've had the book for two weeks now and I've still not been able to part company with it! The thing is it's a brilliant book for anyone: anyone who wants to eat quickly or simply, anyone who wants to show off and entertain, anyone who simply loves cooking and eating. Classic recipes for chilli and bangers and mash sit next to more adventurous meals from roast dinners to banquets. It's an easy book for the lay person as well as students primarily because it dispenses with the naff patronising tone and look that seem to be a staple of most other student cookbooks. This is fresh in voice and appearance and will, I'm sure, take pride of place on many a student kitchen shelf for years to come.

If anyone's after a perfect gift to send off their college-bound kids, one that will take good care of them for the next two or three years away from home, you should look no further than this book.
